Nutrition Services Department (NS)

As the state agency for the United States Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Services, (USDA-FNS) Child Nutrition and Food Distribution Programs, the Nutrition Services Department ensures that children and families receive year round access to well balanced meals by providing federal reimbursements, training and nutrition education to program participants. Nutrition Services assists stakeholders in maintaining a high level of compliance to USDA rules and regulations, thus improving the overall health and learning potential of those in the District of Columbia who are at risk for hunger.

Nutrition Services (NS) promotes the development of nutritionally sound bodies by ensuring that all children and some mentally and physically disabled adults in the District of Columbia have access to healthy, nutritious meals and snacks. In doing this, NS provides cash reimbursement and donated commodity foods to schools, organizations and child and adult care facilities that participate in the Child Nutrition Programs (CNP).

Each CNP is funded through the United States Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Services. The CNPs provide support for children to eat to learn and learn to eat with nutritious school meals and provides nutrition assistance for day care, afterschool and summer programs.
